As a sports fan, it makes me sick if the allegations in Inside ‘The Decision’: Miami’s coup was a ‘surprise’ built on long-coveted goal of James, Wade and Bosh are accurate. “The premise that the trio had been talking about teaming up for months hinted there was a plan in place. That potentially would be against rules, and could raise concerns from the league since Bosh and James were playing for teams battling for the playoffs in Toronto and Cleveland”.

Is this the reason despite having the best record in the league, LeBron James was unable to lead the Cavaliers to the finals? It would be pretty hard for the league MVP to justify leaving had his team gone to the final round two years in a row. Nick Arinson, son of billionaire Heat owner has had access to the three since the World Championships in Japan back in 2004, and is now a “rising executive with the Heat”. Was Heat GM, Pat Riley, really taking a risk the last few years in not signing key players in order to save up the team coffers for a deal such as this, or did Arinson and Wade provide him an inside track to the plan years ago? So much for parity in the NBA (the reason for the draft lottery); David Stern better look into the allegations.

Who knew parties and high paying jobs for athletes friends are part of the bargaining with these mult-million dollar contracts? “It was also made known to James that the Heat would take care of his friends the same way the Cavs did — special treatment at the arena, changing practice and travel schedules to allow for money-making late-night parties in various cities, and perhaps even hiring a James associate in a high-paying position in the organization”. I doubt it’s just the NBA.

No matter what, I say the buck stops with the fans. How, you ask? Fans buy the tickets or watch the games on television and fans buy the sponsors products. Without the promise of fans, there is no such thing as a lucrative professional sports world. One only need look back as recently as the early eighties. The book When the Game Was Ours, points out an NBA rep couldn’t get past the front door of McDonalds and Sprite to make a sponsor pitch before Larry Bird and Magic Johnson came into the league. If there is no fan interest, there is NO MONEY! It’s no coincidence a struggling little company, one of the first to jump on the NBA sponsor band wagon, is now billion dollar sports drink, Gatorade.

While the rumor is Bosh, Wade and James will actually get paid less to play together, it’s never been a secret the athletes make even more money from lucrative endorsements. McDonalds, Coke, Pepsi, Nike, and the list goes on. The next time you’re counting your pennies for that burger, soda or pair of shoes remember that the cost of those endorsements goes into every product that pays to have a celebrity hawk its wares. Fans pay the cost.

The only headlines my current home-town NBA team has made lately is through former star, Kevin Garnett (traded to the Celtics), who suggested to LeBron that loyalty is overrated. As long as we’re talking about money, the Twin Cities does have a couple high-paid athletes. At $10 million per year, Brett Favre would make $41,666.66 per day and $5,208.33 per hour. But his actual earnings with the Minnesota Vikings are reported to be closer to $25 million over two years (if he plays). Joe Mauer recently negotiated an eight-year, $184 million contract extension with the Minnesota Twins. Do the math, he’s making nearly double than Favre at $23 million PER YEAR!

Ironically these two teams have also been at the center of new stadium debates for at least half a decade. The brand new Target Field just took top honors for being the best pro sport stadium experience in North America, so says ESPN Magazine. Afraid the team that pays one player $23 million per year would leave Minneapolis, $392 million in public subsidy was legislated through the Hennepin County sales tax increase for the $522 million project. That’s the fans paying. Or should I say the citizens of Hennepin County, and a good majority will probably never see a game played on that beautiful field.

Another portion comes from locally based Target corporation. The Star Tribune reported, “While specific financial terms weren’t disclosed, several sports analysts around the country estimated the deal could be worth $100 million or more over the 25 years, and one sports marketing analyst said it could be worth $8 million a year or more”. Never mind you don’t live in Minnesota, every roll of toilet paper you buy at one of my favorite stores is affected by the cost of this sponsorship as is every other product they sell. If you’re keeping track, would the costs built-in to name-brand sodas be double considering they may have several athletes to pay, in addition to Target being one of their retailers? One argument for spending exorbitant amounts on these pro teams and their stadiums is because they bring jobs to the area. But one year before Target Field opened, the Star Tribune reported Target Corporation, “lets go about 9 percent of its headquarters workforce, the deepest cuts in company history.” How many salaries would that $8 million sponsorship cover each year? Do you think any of the laid-off folks are now working at Target Field, and if so, does the salary and benefits compare?

The Vikings refuse to play in the Metrodome once their contract expires at the end of the 2011 season and have also said they will leave the city if they don’t get a new stadium for the NFL team (the third for this franchise). Never mind we’re in the worst economy since the Great Depression, these teams and athletes have the leverage to get what they want because when it comes right down to it, our society has made sporting events a priority–but in the end, at what cost?

One criticism of professional sports in the last twenty years is the average fan can’t even afford tickets to see their favorite teams play. Meanwhile these athletes are making more per day than a lot of their fans make in an entire year. Why don’t the leagues own the stadiums, so owners can’t hold cities hostage? Clearly the sports bring enough money in. Shouldn’t that money be budgeted in to league or team expenses BEFORE players salaries, just like any other business?

Okay I digress, but the whole business seems to be a vicious cycle and a sad commentary on what we value as a society.

When I worked with inner-city and underprivileged kids in Atlanta I always thought it was a shame many of them had a pair of Air Jordans or an NBA starter jacket, but sometimes not the basic necessities of life. I don’t know if all the rumors are true, but if Bosh, Wade and James didn’t play by the rules, they shouldn’t be allowed to play. If it means the NBA (and other pro sports) should look into how other athletes ended up on teams as well, then let the probes begin. Since when is “win at all cost” the right way to run a business, especially when the players are heroes and role models for so many kids? Ultimately this situation is just one more symptom of a society whose priorities are shamefully out of order.

Lack of interest has cancelled many a television show, pulled movies out of theaters quicker than you can say “Tom Cruise comeback” and closed up more than one attempted pro league (ABA, AAFC, USFL). I love going to live games, though admittedly they’re very few and far between (yep, it comes down to dollars). Maybe it’s time fans go on strike until the NBA, NFL, MLB & NHL take into consideration who really pays for everything and actually makes it affordable for fans to be fans. No ticket sales equals no attendance, no viewer ratings means no sponsors, which means these leagues would have to restructure their entire organizations and put the fans first instead of these narcissistic athletes.

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” Coach John Wooden

Friday night marked the passing of a great man. Coach Wooden was described as “about as perfect a sports personality as there ever was”, by sportscastor Dick Enberg. But sports fans aside, this man’s lessons reached far beyond the basketball court.

Hall of famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and one of Wooden’s many student athletes remembers, “He set quite an example. He was more like a parent than a coach. He really was a very selfless and giving human being, but he was a disciplinarian. We learned all about those aspects of life that most kids want to skip over. He wouldn’t let us do that.”

Another coach very familiar with winning, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, praised the man by saying, “Many have called Coach Wooden the ‘gold standard’ of coaches. I believe he was the ‘gold standard’ of people and carried himself with uncommon grace, dignity and humility”.

UCLA was actually Coach Wooden’s second choice back in 1948. The University of Minnesota also wanted him and he and his wife preferred the Midwest. A snow storm in Minnesota prevented Wooden from getting the scheduled phone offer from the Golden Gophers, so he accepted a job with the Bruins because he thought Minnesota had lost interest. When the University of Minnesota finally made contact with Wooden, he turned down their offer because he had already given his word to the Bruins.

Coach Wooden also became well known to the world beyond basketball, for his nuggets of life wisdom and his Pyramid of Success.

It took 16 years for UCLA to win their first championship under Coach Wooden. When asked about this in an interview later in life, he replied, “I’m a slow learner, but once I learn something, I know it pretty good”. In fact in his 29 years as a head coach he never had a losing season, but these days if you aren’t winning championships, your job is in jeopardy.

Ironically on the day Coach Wooden passed away, the NBA team with the best record in the league (who didn’t make it to the finals) fired their coach, their GM resigned and their star player (and league MVP) is considering a move to a different team that will pay more money and is perceived to have a better chance of winning it all. Coach Wooden felt one of his strongest traits was patience. Luckily, it was a trait UCLA shared AND benefitted from.

John Wooden was paid $35,000 a year salary and he never asked for a raise. He turned down an offer to coach the Los Angeles Lakers which probably would have been ten times what UCLA was paying him. These days it seems like loyalty is determined by the highest bidder.

None of the dozens of All Americans who played for Coach Wooden can remember even one time when he ever used the words “winning” or “losing”, but his record speaks for itself:

Born in 1910 and just four months shy of 100 at his death, he’d been retired for 35 years, yet almost reverently the title Coach usually accompanies the name John Wooden. His last team walked off the court after winning UCLA’s 10th straight title under his guidance back in 1975. Coach Wooden’s records still stand and probably always will, but when it comes to remembering this great man the accolades show his character and his reputation are one and the same.

Sometimes it’s all about setting the mood. Never mind that Christmas day itself is over. Before you go any further, click on my virtual fireplace below and let the music (of my oldest brother, Philip Pfaltzgraff) set the scene while you read on.

Speaking of virtual, my mailbox has definitely been more sparse this season and I can’t help but think Facebook has something to do with that. More folks are finally realizing being a bookie isn’t just for the kids. Of course the ability to catch up on any given day (sometimes several times) with friends from around the globe, could eventually make the Christmas card obsolete. If you don’t have my current address (we moved to a condo this past May, and have never appreciated it more than during this last snow storm), let me know. Cards and letters (even newsletters) are always better than bills or junk!

While some of what I have to share may be redundant for those following me via Facebook, Twitter or this blog, I’m pretty sure the odds of very many of my updates and tweets coming through to people with hundreds of friends, is slim.

Taylor and Chloe traded theater this fall to be varsity cheerleaders. They probably don’t realize how deeply cheerleading runs in their blood. As hard as it is for them to picture me as a cheerleader (so what if it was only one year and for girls basketball), it’s an even bigger stretch to picture Mama’ (Grandma Jo) with pom-poms! Who knew they were going from the second most dangerous sport (gymnastics) to the most dangerous (cheerleading)? I swear if they went to social services and showed them all their bruises, black eyes and nose bumps, I’d be top story at ten.

I must say cheerleading these days is nothing like I remember. In addition to cheering for football, they’re also a competitive team. Think ESPN. Speaking of which, they’ll be competing at the UCA Nationals in Orlando in February (last year’s team placed 5th). I would post a video of them cheering, but I wouldn’t want the spies to get a hold of what they’re doing, lest this give an edge to some competing team (or so the coaches tell me). Never thought I’d be going back to Disney World at this stage of the game, but at least we’ll get a reprieve from winter.

Taylor is a junior and can’t stand it when people ask her what she wants to do after high school. Despite all her enriched and AP courses, her obsession is fashion and undoubtedly she’ll end up in this world if she has her way. Designer (she sketched a beautiful collection for fashion class), editor of Elle (she’s in-depth editor of the school newspaper) or maybe a blog ala “Julie & Julia” (but for fashion, not food). Taylor may not know exactly what she wants to do, but she has her sights set on NYC, California, London and Paris. Looks like I’ll have some great places to visit in the future.

Chloe is a freshman who people think looks like the junior (much to her sister’s chagrin)! Her passion is music. She did a duet of Jason Mraz’s song “Lucky” in the spring concert and Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” for the talent show (click on the arrows in the video links if you want to hear her) . She also excels in her enriched schedule, but has no intention of pursuing a career in math or science. Between Apple’s Garage Band and iMovie, she may just have a future in composing and producing. Chloe is my social butterfly who wears her heart on her sleeve (yes, there is such a thing as a wonderful teenager, I happen to have two).

Come spring I expect both girls will make every effort to get into their school’s theater productions. When they gave it up in the fall for cheerleading, it was not without angst.

As of the end of August, Taylor is driving a cute little ’98 yellow bug (thanks to a nothing-like-Cinderella-step-mom). Her ability to drive has certainly changed my life (but the freedom hasn’t come without it’s share of concern at having a teen driver). I’m sure this next August Chloe will be “chomping at the bit” to get her permit as soon as she turns fifteen.

A year ago I wondered if my dad would be here to celebrate another Christmas. He and my mom have settled into a different type of life with him in the health care part of The Village, but there does seem to be some peace of mind amongst the inevitable changes. Papa’ will turn 87 in March, Mama’ will be 81 in May and they celebrated their 62nd anniversary in ’09!

I’m trying to stake out my little piece of the world wide web by posting (semi) regularly on this blog and my new video blog. Bookmark the pages so you can check back regularly. I also love it when you post your comments, so don’t be shy!

I cannot believe it was ten years ago we were all holding our breath over Y2K. Our lives are so busy and the time is just flying because we fill nearly every minute of each day. This holiday season take time to enjoy the ones you love.

Let me play out the final scene with this fun medley the girls recorded (click on play arrow in the video below).

Greenbay fans would probably say their NFL rival has already changed color with the acquisition of former Packer quarterback, Brett Favre. But the green I’m thinking of is much more “sustainable” than the color of a jersey, and it would mean sacrificing some of that “purple pride”.

Before I go any further, let me qualify this is not coming from some girl who hates sports. I followed Cedar Falls High school’s basketball team to state my senior year by paying my own bus fare. I made a poster (as only a radical fan would) for Morningside College’s basketball team when they went to the Final IV (Div II) and made the trip to Springfield, MO. I won a national contest to see Kareem Abdul-Jabbar play his final game in the NBA by answering eighty “trivia” questions about him. And when I moved back to the midwest from Atlanta, Minneapolis was considered worthy in part, because they had three professional sport franchises (it was before the Wild).

I was caught up in the Twins pennant race at the end of the summer. I think it’s ironic (and cool) a former Laker is now coaching the Timberwolves. And like the rest of the city, I’m thrilled the Vikings national attention this year is for their plays on the field (not off).

But the field is what I really want to talk about. The Gophers recently debuted their new TCF Stadium. Spring can’t come quick enough for the Twins who are just itching to throw that first pitch outdoors at Target Field. Then there’s the Vikings. Poor Vikings. Playing at the shameful Metro Dome. Between the team and owner Zygi Wilf you’d think the place should already be sporting those bright orange condemned stickers.

Don’t get me wrong. I get they’d like to keep up with the other local teams, the other NFL teams and professional sports in general, by building a brand new, state of the art stadium. Kind of reminds me when I lived in my old neighborhood. Even though we had beautiful new custom-built homes, we often found them lacking when someone else built something bigger, fancier or with better features. That neighborhood is nearly two decades old, and while the homeowners can now justify the need to remodel and upgrade here and there, it would be ludicrous to think they all needed to move out because those homes are no longer livable.

I’ve always tried not to be too indulgent with my girls. As a single mom, financially I’m unable to give them what I once could. But for the most part, they (should) basically want for nothing, because they really do have so very much.

I think the Vikings (and everyone else) could take a lesson from my (16 year-old) daughter. Last year when I asked her what she wanted for Christmas, the file she attached to an email was three pages long and had everything on it from magazine subscriptions to a Mini Cooper and was entitled, “My Greedy Little Wish List”.

Trust me, had all the desired loot found its way under the tree, she would’ve been in heaven and I doubt it would enter her mind to wonder who paid for it all (she is a teenager, after all). But the fact she knew these things were a “greedy little wish list” tells me I’ve done at least one thing right as a parent.

So what does all this have to do with the Vikings wanting a new stadium? I know it’s the American way to want, want, want and then want more. Keep up with the Joneses (Gophers, Twins and Los Angeles). Bigger, better, newer, flashier. In fact the Vikings are just one of six NFL teams planning on a new stadium.

I’ve only been to one Twins game in the last couple years. Never seen the Vikings play live. Maybe catch the Timberwolves once a season. As much as I enjoy watching, seeing the local teams play live is a luxury not many can afford to do on a regular basis. I’m a fan of sports in general and can be found yelling at the television many times all year long during the various sport seasons.

Unless the Metro Dome (and all the other stadiums around the country) is a safety hazard, I think it’s high time we quit looking at these multi-million dollar sports complexes as “throw-away” just because it’s not “new” enough. Never mind the economy has been in the tank for over a year, and people are going without healthcare (and food, and shelter and…). Not only are we a wasteful society, we also have a tendency to live beyond our means.

With all the corporate layoffs, what company can justify the expenditure of an even pricier box at a new stadium? The so-called run down and inferior locker rooms would be something many former pro athletes can only wish would’ve been available to their generation. Taxpayers can’t afford single tickets to the games played in the current stadiums, let alone an increase in taxes to pay for a new one. Whether it’s foreclosed mortgages or the on-going deficit of the government, we seem to want it all and we want it right now, even though we don’t know how it’s going to be paid for.

Back to the Vikings going green (I know, it’s about time, huh?)! I cannot believe there are no architects and experts that could take the Metro Dome and “sustainably” rehabilitate it. Shame on anyone (especially Zygi, with his degree in economics) who thinks in this economy we should be spending millions on something this frivolous when there are so many who go without so much.

Film the process (HGTV meets Extreme Makeover) and charge the advertisers Super Bowl rates. Okay, I digress, but I’m just trying to point out there are viable solutions that are more responsible, all the way around. Done right, the team could take pride on the field, off the field and because of the field. Hmmm…

Since when is it a bad thing to have the President address the children of this country? How do you turn asking school children to write a letter telling the President how they can help him, into partisan politics?

You’d think this was Cuba or Russia and not the United States of America.

I suggest parents have a little more confidence in the way they’re raising their children. Provide them with a strong consistent foundation (walk the talk), allow them a little room so they aren’t afraid to ask questions (if they don’t ask you, they’ll ask someone else), and the older they get, don’t be surprised if their viewpoints don’t always line up with yours (no matter how much YOU have indoctrinated them).

It’s not as if the Department of Education mandated the kids tell Obama why they support his views on health care reform. I imagine letters from elementary students would actually read something like this:

Dear Mr. President,
I will help you by trying to be nice to all the kids in my class if they don’t pick their nose.
Signed,
Michael, Age 5 Kindergarten

Dear Mr. President,
I asked my mom to bring extra markers and crayons for the kids in my class who don’t have any. Is that helping?
Your Friend,
Tiffany, Age 6 First Grade

Dear Mr. President,
I will work hard on my spelling and eat most of my lunch. I also try not to watch too much tv but it’s only cause my parents won’t let me. BTW what IS health care?
Later dude,
Henry, Age 7 Second Grade

Dear Mr. President,
We are being pen pals to the soldiers in Iraq. We write letters so they won’t miss their families so much while they’re in the desert. Can you please write me back? Maybe you and me could be pen pals too.
Love,
Jennifer, Age 8 Third Grade

Reagan and Bush 41 addressed school children when they were President. I think a presidential pep talk should become an annual tradition. Every day our kids are influenced by various celebrity “role models”, why not the leader of the FREE world?

Didn’t you hate when you’d ask for something and your parents would tell you, “money doesn’t grow on trees”? I’m betting as parents yourself, you’ve used that line any number of times with your own kids. My daughters will also tell you one of my favorite mantras is, “nothing in life is really free”.

Don’t get me wrong, I love getting free things. Who doesn’t? Even Oprah Winfrey (who has a bezillion dollars) loves to get things for free. But what I’ve tried to teach my kids is somebody has to pay for everything and in reality, the bottom line is, the person who thinks they’re getting something for free is usually the one paying for it.

I have to admit, I have not (and don’t plan to) read all the lengthy (and undoubtedly legal jargon-filled) proposals for a national health care system (before I finish this post anyway). At the very least it would give me a headache which would then increase my own health care costs. Tylenol for the headache, a visit to the optometrist for eye strain, maybe a trip to a chiropractor for an adjustment from the neck strain of pouring over said proposals. Surely you get the picture.

Instead, lets stick to something simpler, that even my kids can understand. FREE PIZZA! Nothing we love better than going to Papa Johns or Punch Pizza and not having to pay any money for that piping hot pie with pepperoni (for the kids) or goat cheese and arugula (for me). Trust me, if a coupon comes my way, I WILL use it. But my girls will tell you just because the garlic dipping or wood burning delight didn’t require we shell out any cash, someone paid for it. When was the last time food suppliers were giving out ingredients for free? I doubt the employees volunteered to make our dinner for free. Our “free” supper was part of the marketing budget, which is ultimately figured into the price of the pizzas we do shell actual dollars out for, which means in reality, WE paid for our “free” pizza. Now how to get this back to health care?

Other than the obvious connection of obesity ratios to pizza consumption here in the good ‘ol U.S. of A., any national health care system funded by the government is really you and me (if we’re paying taxes). Last time I looked, the Senate and Congress don’t have any money growing trees up on Capitol Hill either.

I admit I’ve gone without health insurance, but you figure eventually life will catch up with you (something about not being a spring chicken anymore) and the premise of all insurance is to cover you in catastrophic situations, so if you’re not a fan of Russian Roulette, being covered is the better option.

As someone who has had to pay for her own health insurance for the last several years and watched my premiums nearly double, I too would like a break. I’m as healthy as a horse (never mind about those poor creatures in Florida). I had my first cold in eight years this past spring, so I swear I pay more in premiums than it would cost me to just pay full price for the annual check ups my insurance company “pays” for.

Seems to me the focus should be on controlling the price of health care (I guess that’s another way of saying regulation) whether that’s the insurance premiums and/or actual treatment and prescriptions. Maybe equally as important would be to put a system in place that requires anyone with a job to pay their share (directly correlated to the income earned). If we go back to the Pizza theory, anyone who currently pays for insurance and/or treatment and prescriptions, is ultimately paying for those without anyway. Just like the “free” pizza, the actual cost is built in for those paying customers.

Should health care be a right? Yes and no. How can a country as wealthy as the US deny the sick? On the other hand, there are lots of folks who choose not to have insurance but they drive a nice car, wear nice clothes, and have the latest technology gizmos. If you collect a pay check, couldn’t there be a deduction (yes, I mean tax) for health care? There’s a social security tax, federal and state taxes, why not a health care tax? Don’t make it an option. It’s not an option to drive a car and not have insurance, why should it be an option to have a job and not be contributing to the cost of health care? Deduct it from our pay BEFORE we go spend it all on pizza (or the latest Nikes, IPhone, 56″ Flat panel TV, new laptop, concert, theater or sporting event…).

If we’re handing out “rights”, making sure there are no hungry bellies or people sleeping without roofs over their heads could be considered a more immediate necessity (and would ultimately cut down on health care costs), but as I’ve said at least a time or two before, this would be a subject for an entirely different post.

Right now I need nourishment, and I think a piping hot pizza will fill the bill. If only I could find a valid “free” coupon!

Nope, just not the same.

As I watched the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan romantic comedy with my two daughters last night, my 16 year-old lamented the loss of the good old days. I’m sure you’re thinking, “I remember that movie, it wasn’t that long ago”, but the longer I watched, the more I agreed with my daughter. Oh to go back to a time when cell phones were only for people who were trying to look important and e-mail was still a phenomenon.

My oldest would’ve been five, her sister three, when this particular chick flick made its debut in 1998. I didn’t even get a “home” computer till ’99. Just like the movie, it had a dial up modem and my girls gleefully remembered the sound and the progression of the AOL characters on the screen as the computer was in it’s various stages of connecting.

You may recall the premise of the movie was based on the big bad conglomerate bookstore (Barnes & Noble?) running out the mom and pop shop by coming in with their discounts and fancy cafe coffee shop. Not only had the concept of wi-fi not yet been invented (a staple of all those bookstore cafes these days), cellular phones (which were hideously big and clunky) were anything but mobile (there wasn’t even one used in the movie).

The only way Joe and Catherine could communicate was via the internet when they were (gasp) at home! Picture e-mails written like real letters, “Dear Shopgirl…” (certainly longer than 140 characters) and instant messaging before it was taken over by teenagers (and their secret abbreviated language).

While online dating no longer has the tabu it once did, chat rooms are now kind of creepy and many e-mail exchanges are no longer so innocent (yes, I know Shopgirl and NY152 had significant others when they met in the chat room too). The internet itself could be compared to Pandora’s Box, given it’s effect has nearly as many negative consequences as positive. The difference in how computers are used and the absence of cell phones (and constant texting) was so obvious, my daughter said it was scary to think what changes might occur in technology during the next decade. She actually wished she was older “back then” so she could’ve enjoyed a society that wasn’t constantly on a computer or phone. Face-to-face interaction, now there’s a novel concept!

The other thing we both noticed was how cute (and expressive) Meg Ryan looked BEFORE Botox and plastic surgery, but that’s a whole different post!

See what Shopgirl and NY152′s IM exchange might look like today. Definitely humorous, but also a loss of innocence.

Why, oh why didn’t I buy stock back when Google was just a little start-up company? It was considered start-up at one time, yes? I always say the computer and I are on a need to know basis, but Google goes a long way in making me appear tech-savvy.

I admit, I held out for quite awhile thinking there was no way Gmail could be as safe as pulling AOL or MSN into Outlook. What if they lost my e-mail or even worse, what if someone at Google might be hacking into my Gmail trying to discover all those state secrets I don’t know? I realized equating the internet (more specifically Gmail) with the likes of the boogie man was merely a figment of my imagination, and those lurking creatures on the world wide web are about as dangerous as the ones under my bed. So I turned my soul over to Google, because they keep creating all these wonderful applications (for lack of a better term) that not only make me look tech-savvy, they actually make my life easier.

IGoogle is my homepage because it gives me easy access to everything I need on the web in one place. Gmail is way more than just e-mail since I can also IM (instant message), and voice or video chat in real time. Google Calendar sends me e-mail reminders as well as SMS (text) which beats post-it notes everywhere, so I’m not late returning a book to the library, paying a bill or miss a hair appointment that was pre-booked six weeks earlier. Google Docs comes in handy with no MSWord on my Mac, and since I don’t have Photo Shop, I rely on Google Images (how do you think I get all the pictures for this blog).

If you’ve somehow resisted the pull towards technology, they may just get you with Google Voice. When I recently moved I dropped the land line (hard line, home phone, or whatever you want to call it), because I was paying for a service I rarely used. Of course every time I have to fill out some type of form, it always asks for two numbers and I can’t help but wonder if I’m looked down upon for having only one.

No more! As of last night I am back in the ranks of the two phone number family. I heard about Google Voice several months ago, but after my friend got me all excited about this new service he then told me they weren’t handing out any new numbers. It was kind of cruel to cause me to have Google envy when he knew there was no quick fix, but I did my research (yes, I Googled it) and found I could ask to be notified when they opened the service to the minions.

I think I replied to the invitation last night before it even had time to really register as being in my inbox. There were lots of choices but picking a number was easy. Something similar to my cell number so it would be easy to remember. When I plugged in the same last four digits with the same area code there was only one option that fit my two parameters, so I’m guessing it’s kind of like claiming my vanity URL on Facebook. First come, first serve.

Within minutes of starting to set things up on Google Voice, I knew the next thing I needed to do was get the word out and not keep this latest greatest piece of technology to myself. Tweeting the link that simultaneously updated my Facebook status was the quickest way to tell everyone they too need to get an invite (you can’t get a number without one). The further I got into the set-up of my new account, I knew the topic of my next blog post would be to tell everyone about it in more than 140 characters.

I love Google Voice, let me count the ways:

I now have another number and I can choose to hand it out as my home or business line.

It has voicemail that let’s you record a personal greeting for each specific contact (if you choose). I’ve done a couple just because it’s pretty nifty for someone to feel so loved when they call me.

You can screen calls and even listen in when they’re leaving a message, just like the old answering machines. If you want you can interrupt and take the call once you know it’s not a telemarketer or stalker.

Should you get creepy callers (I imagine this could be the perfect number to give someone you meet on match or pof, um, not that I would actually know). You can block them if you change your mind and even have a recording play that says, “this number has been disconnected and is no longer in service”.

The voicemails are transcribed and sent to you via e-mail. It’s pretty funny what the computer thinks you’re saying and I can listen to the message by clicking on the play link in my e-mail. Don’t even actually need my phone. Saves my cell minutes!

I can send SMS (text) messages from my computer which is great for all those people who aren’t “in” my Verizon network.

You can have it ring one, or more numbers. The person calling doesn’t know you’re actually answering your cell, at work, or home because they dial your Google Voice number.

You can have it go straight to voicemail so it doesn’t ring at all.

You can even record entire conversations, which could come in handy if George Clooney ever calls me!

These are just a few of the reasons I’m so excited and over-the-top about Google Voice. Don’t take my word for it though. Click on this link and get your own invite!

Where were you on Thursday, June 25th when you heard the news Michael Jackson had passed away?

I’ve never been a Michael Jackson fan per say, but songs like I’ll Be There or ABC bring a smile to my face. I love Ben, who the heck cares that it’s about a rat? During a recent move I came across the album Off the Wall, too bad I don’t have a record player anymore.

As expected, the death of Jackson has dominated the news the last few days. Many people are crying hypocrisy, after all many of the same media folks singing MJ’s praises are the same ones who referred to him as Wacko Jacko when he was alive. It is strange given in the last decade, very few would outwardly admit to being a fan of Michael, but clearly the majority of people now want to reminisce and pay homage.

I think his death has given us a permission of sorts to remember and mourn the Michael Jackson we grew up with. He was such a cute boy and handsome young man, but somehow couldn’t see the same man in the mirror most of us saw. It is sad that Michael may not have realized how admired he was for his musical prowess, but given his penchant for strange and unpredictible behavior in the last couple of decades, it’s understandable why few were willing to risk their own reputations by speaking out on his behalf. His passing allows us to concentrate on the musical genius Michael was and to pay tribute to his accomplishments that have paved the road and opened doors that will effect untold generations to come.

It didn’t take long for shock and denial to be replaced by lots of questions as to how he died. Some folks think out of respect for Michael this isn’t the time to raise those questions. Others say it’s tabloid journalism.

The continuous news cycle on MJ’s death is more than just the tabloids. Many of us found out through social networking like Facebook and Twitter, and then went for confirmation to TMZ’s website, which may be tabloid, but they were first to call it. CNN, FNC and MSNBC had nearly wall-to-wall coverage for 24 hours.

No matter what his personal demons may have been, it just seems right to acknowledge and recognize Michael’s contributions to music and entertainment. How ironic that he himself was never able to really grasp his own worth. His eccentricities & cause of death will fade, just as it has with Elvis.

Few will truly be surprised to learn if Michael did indeed die of a prescription drug cocktail gone wrong. In many ways we’ve grown apathetic to this problem. But the suspicious availabilty of Rx’s is just one horrible symptom of a much larger over-all problem, the cause and effect of our society’s obsession with celebrity. Michael Jackson’s entire life is one sad lesson about the downside of fame.

We’ll never really have answers to so many questions surrounding his life, but the best insight into Michael Jackson comes from himself in this line from a piece he wrote, “…while singing and dancing were, and undoubtedly remain, some of my greatest joys, at that time what I wanted more than anything else were the two things that make childhood the most wondrous years of life, namely, playtime and a feeling of freedom…”

In the after-life, I hope Michael has somehow been restored and has finally found the peace he never had in this world.

I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make that change

A friend recently said his son wanted to know who was better, Kobe or LeBron. He went on to challenge me by saying, “Okay Laker fan…Magic right? Kareem?”

Why must everyone insist on having one athlete be better than another? As time goes on it’s inevitable someone else will always come along to claim the title of “most dominant” because athletic prowess is susceptible to aging.

The NBA is littered with dominant athletes throughout it’s history. The real debate probably started with Wilt Chamberlain. He’s the only player in NBA history to average more than 40 and 50 points in a season or score a 100 points in a single NBA game. His titles include scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and even assists.

Then along came Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (aka Lew Alcindor). The dunk was banned from college ball after the 1967 season because Alcindor was so dominant with that particular shot. His skyhook is the opposite in demeanor but no more defendable. Many of Kareem’s individual records at UCLA still stand, which is amazing considering freshman were ineligible to play varsity (so his numbers are from only three years of play), not to mention all the athletes who’ve gone through that basketball machine since. Abdul-Jabbar is the all-time leading NBA scorer with 38,387 points. He won six championships, was named regular season MVP six times and Finals MVP twice. Kareem played in a record nineteen NBA All-Star games and played in the league for twenty years retiring at the age of 42 in 1989.

Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and some guy named Michael Jordan. At one time or another the argument has been made each is the best player, but when it comes to dominance, Jordan is at the top of the list.

His biography on the official NBA website states, “By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time.” Jordan “three-peated” with the Chicago Bulls winning back-to-back-to-back championships, retired in 1993, came back to play for the Washington Wizards for two seasons, then three-peated with the Bulls again before retiring for good in January 1999.

Led the NBA in scoring in 10 seasons (NBA record)

Holds the top career and playoff scoring averages of 30.1 and 33.4 points per game, respectively

Total of 5,987 points in the playoffs is the highest in NBA history

Retired with 32,292 points, placing him third on the NBA’s all-time scoring list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (and Karl Malone)

Five regular-season MVPs (tied for second place with Bill Russell; only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has won more, six)

Six Finals MVPs (NBA record)

Three All-Star MVPs, Jordan is the most decorated player ever to play in the NBA

When Kobe first came into the league (straight from high school) he was being called “baby Jordan”but many of his young fans have never even seen Michael play. Now that Kobe’s 30, Cleveland fans are itching to pass on the mantle to LeBron James.

It’s one thing to compare athletes who play the same position, like Bill Russell, Chamberlain, Jabbar and Shaquille O’Neal, but even then not only does the era make a big difference, the “supporting cast” does as well. Michael Jordan had a lot of lean years till Scottie Pippen and the gang arrived (he didn’t win it all with the Wizards). Jabbar and Magic, Bird and Kevin McHale, Shaq and Kobe. It takes a team. The deeper, the better.

My reply to my friend, “Tell your son that Kobe is better…now…but just like MJ was better when Kobe was a youngster…LeBron will also someday take the throne, just not yet. The truly great ones never have anyone who’s just like them (Michael, Magic, Kareem) but they become part of a very exclusive club which recognizes the attributes each one has brought to the game”.

Meanwhile, if the Denver Nuggets and the Orlando Magic have their way, they aim to make folks forget about Bryant and James (at least temporarily), as both teams are still very much contenders to make it to this year’s NBA finals.
